Description
This Ammolite necklace of green and dark blue as well as a bit of flash orange in one corner is set in a SS bezel. 6-8mm baroque pearls dyed a light lime green, round 6mm mother of pearl and silver barrel hematite beads make up the necklace. This necklace is 17″ long plus .7″ for the Ammolite doublet of green and dark blue. This particular gemstone is opal-like in its iridescence with the amount of ‘flash’ seen will depend on the angle of the light.
Ammolite is the iridescent gem material found on ammonite fossils. Over 300 million years ago, ammonites were ocean dwelling mollusks. Their relatives alive today include cuttlefish, octopus and squid. Ammolite gemstone is considered to be one of the rarest and most valuable due to its age, limited location and cost of ‘mining’ and preparing the gemstone. The technique of a doublet (providing a base for a fragile gemstone) is used for the gemstone’s security and longevity. Ammolite was given gemstone status in 1981 by the World Jewelry Confederation and is mined almost exclusively from the Bearpaw Formation in Southwestern Alberta, Canada.
